Mallorca’s hidden coves: Discover the most stunning ‘calas’ for families

Our Mediterranean paradise is framed by over 250 beaches, ranging from sandy ‘calas’ (or coves) to rocky bays. Here in Palma Nova, you’re lucky to have a kilometre-long stretch of sand with clear waters, plus Son Maties and Es Carregador. If you’re looking for smaller family-friendly ‘calas’, here are some of our hottest picks in Mallorca’s southwest and around the island. Don’t forget the sunscreen.
Camp de Mar - Sandy cove in the southwest
A 15-minute drive west of Ca’s Saboners, this crescent-shaped beach is flanked by pine forests and the most crystalline sea. This picture-perfect setting is enhanced by Restaurante Illeta, a seemingly floating restaurant connected to the shore by a walkway. There are sun loungers, umbrellas, showers and a shop for essentials. With lifeguards on duty and pedalos for hire, this is a perfect place for family fun and building sandcastles.
Cala Vinyes - Secluded spot near Magaluf
45 minutes on foot or just over 5 minutes by car, this 60-metre cove on the other side of Magaluf is set among palms and pine trees. Cala Vinyes is a U-shaped sea inlet that ends in two golden beaches, where you’ll find umbrellas, sunbeds and showers plus the all-important lifeguards and easy transport to and from Palma Nova.
Cala Comtessa - A slice of paradise in the southwest
Over by Illetas beach, another beautiful sandy cove with an upmarket restaurant and bar, you’ll find the secluded cove of Cala Comtessa, a slice of sand facing twinkling turquoise waters. There is a small bar, or ‘chiringuito’ close by. Overcrowding and parking can be an issue, especially during high season.
Cala Mondragó - Back to nature in the southeast
If you’ve hired a car, explore the island to discover more spectacular coves. Head to Cala Mondragó close to Cala d’Or, where its tranquil, shallow waters are ideal for young kids to play safely. Set within a natural park, this cove is stunning with soft sand perfect for building sandcastles. It’s a small beach that gets crowded so go early. Over an hour’s drive, but it’s worth it.
Cala Llombards - Another world in the southeast
You’ve probably seen this cove on Instagram. White sand surrounded by rocks, trees and the clearest sea you’ve ever seen. Again, this can get very crowded since the sandy area is relatively small but there’s a lovely beach bar and sunloungers with umbrellas. Cala Llombards is not far from the pretty town of Santanyí where you’ll find another sandy cove.
There you have it—our favourite coves in Calvià and around the island. We look forward to welcoming you soon and we’re sure you’re already looking forward to your beach days.
